Where History, Nature & Sweet Moments Meet
From Advisory Board Member: Sarah Clark
When I think about a memorable family trip, one place that always comes to mind is Nauvoo, Illinois. Nestled along the Mississippi River, this charming town offers the perfect blend of history, nature, and family-friendly fun. Whether you’re exploring your roots or just looking to slow things down, Nauvoo feels like stepping into a quieter, more meaningful moment with your kids. No rush, no packed schedule—just time to connect, laugh, and soak in the good stuff together.
Step Back in Time with Hands-On History
One of the things I love about Nauvoo is how interactive the history is. My kids especially enjoy rolling up their sleeves and experience the past instead of just reading about it. It’s these hands-on moments that make history come alive, and I know they’ll remember them for years to come.
Pioneer Pastimes Pavilion: My kids had the best time dressing up in old pioneer clothes and pretending they were back in the 1800s. There’s something sweet about watching them run around in bonnets and suspenders, giggling and playing with simple toys that don’t need batteries or screens.
Family Living Center: This was one of our favorite stops. They got to try things like candle-making, weaving, and even shaping rope by hand. The slower pace gave us a special window into the past and a deeper appreciation for the way people once lived.
Blacksmith & Gun Shop: The blacksmiths always capture my kids’ attention. Watching fire and metal turn into tools—and seeing the look of awe on my son’s face—reminds me how valuable it is to witness real craftsmanship.
Scovil Bakery: Although they no longer bake here, the gingerbread cookie sample is a highlight. I still remember the look of pure joy on my daughter’s face when she got one. As we walked away eating our cookies, the excitement on their faces made the moment feel even sweeter.
Wagon Rides: Riding in a wagon drawn by beautiful horses, or even oxen, is another highlight. It’s such a simple experience, but it allows us to relax and take in the scenery. My kids always ask to go again, and I love how peaceful those rides feel.
Enjoy the Outdoors and Unplug Together
One of the best things about Nauvoo is how easy it is to step outside, breathe a little deeper, and slow down with the people you love. These are a few of our favorite peaceful places to reconnect:
Nauvoo State Park: We’ve visited the state park a couple of times, and each visit leaves us feeling refreshed and more connected. You can go fishing, hike, camp, or simply enjoy a picnic by the lake. The kids love exploring the trails, and there’s always a quiet moment by the water where we catch our breath and just be together.
Mississippi River Views: There are several hidden gems along the river where we like to sit and watch the boats float by. It’s peaceful and slow, a time to reflect and just be without distractions. One of our favorite places is a little riverside spot called David’s Chamber. It’s tucked away along the Mississippi and has become a special place for us to pause. The kids love climbing around the rocks and watching the boats, and I love the stillness it brings. It’s simple, quiet, and grounding—one of those places where we just feel together.
Nauvoo Women’s Garden: This was a quiet favorite. It’s such a beautiful space filled with meaning and love. I found myself reflecting on the strength and grace of the women who came before us—and it was a lovely place to share a tender moment with my daughter. For a peaceful stop that stirs the soul, the Women’s Garden is a special place to rest, breathe, and take in the beauty around you.

Treats and Eats the Whole Family Will Love
After a day of exploring, a good meal always brings us together. Nauvoo has some cozy, delicious options that hit the spot.
Lock 19: This was one of the first places we tried, and it instantly felt like home. The cozy atmosphere and hearty dishes made it a perfect stop to unwind and recharge.
Nauvoo Hotel Buffet: When everyone’s hungry, the buffet is a lifesaver. The kids love the variety, and I appreciate how easy it is to fill up the whole crew without any fuss.
Fudge Factory: And of course, it wouldn’t be a trip without fudge. It’s become a tradition. We each pick our favorite flavors, along with some tasty caramels, and enjoy them as we wander through town. The smiles are worth every bite.
End the Day with a Show to Remember
During the summer months, the live performances in Nauvoo are not to be missed.
Nauvoo Pageant: We’ve been several times, and it never gets old. The energy, the music, the outdoor setting—it’s a beautiful, inspiring way to end the day. Sitting together under the sky, sharing that experience as a family, is something we all treasure.
Sunset on the Mississippi: This was such a delightful surprise. It’s a fun, family-friendly variety show full of singing, dancing, and laughter. Perfect for winding down the evening together.
A Place That Stays with You
Nauvoo holds such a special place in our hearts. It’s a small town, but it offers so many opportunities to slow down and enjoy life’s simple pleasures—discovering history together, exploring nature, and sharing a good meal. If you’re looking for a peaceful, meaningful family escape, Nauvoo might just become one of your favorite places too.
